• Selenium (Se) is an antioxidant naturally abundant in foods such as meat, fish, and dairy products. The recommended daily intake of selenium is 40–50 micrograms. The safe upper limit is considered to be 300–400 micrograms.
• Selenium is a key trace element in cellular enzyme function, particularly as a component of the glutathione peroxidase enzyme that protects against oxidative stress. Thus, selenium helps protect cells from oxidative stress. Selenium is required for the production of thyroid hormones that regulate metabolism, as well as for fertility, immune system function, and healthy hair.
• Selenium contributes to the maintenance of normal hair. Selenium contributes to normal spermatogenesis. Selenium contributes to the normal function of the immune system.
• L-selenomethionine is an organic selenium compound that is absorbed efficiently.
