Physiological effects
Native to the Mediterranean region, Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum) is a beautiful plant with purple-red inflorescences. It belongs to the Asteraceae family. Previously, the Latin name for milk thistle was Carduus marianus.
The active ingredients of milk thistle are in its ripe seeds; these are several compounds belonging to the flavonolignan group, collectively called silymarin. Of these, silybin (or silibinin) is the most abundant (48 mg/tablet) and also the most significant in terms of its effects.
Milk thistle has been known for over 2,000 years for its effect on the liver. In the Middle Ages, it was used to increase milk production, which is how the plant's English name, "milk thistle," originated.
However, the effects of milk thistle are mainly associated with the liver.
Milk thistle is recommended for protecting the liver and for supporting and enhancing liver function.
Silymarin, the active substance in milk thistle seeds, protects the liver in many ways, including against the harmful effects of alcohol, medications, and other harmful chemicals. Silymarin increases the amount of glutathione, our body's most important antioxidant, and stabilizes liver cell membranes.
Silymarin boosts liver cell metabolism and also affects insulin resistance by improving the insulin sensitivity of liver cells. Poor appetite and fatigue may be liver-related. In such cases, a course of milk thistle may be helpful.
One Liverin® tablet contains 200 mg of milk thistle seed extract, of which 160 mg is silymarin. 200 mg of extract corresponds to 5,000 mg of dried milk thistle seeds. It is recommended to take the tablets in 2-month courses.
