Physiological effects
Adequate vitamin D intake should be ensured throughout life. Vitamin D is formed in the skin under the influence of sunlight. In food, vitamin D is obtained from fatty fish, fish oil, eggs, mushrooms, and vitamin-fortified foods such as milk and margarine. The vitamin D intake of Finns has been found to be insufficient. The recommended daily intake of vitamin D is 7.5 micrograms/day for ages 2-17, 10 micrograms/day for ages 18-74, and 20 micrograms/day for those over 75. For pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, a vitamin D supplement of 10 micrograms/day is recommended year-round.
Since dietary sources of vitamin D are quite limited, a vitamin D supplement is recommended year-round, especially for children, young people, the elderly, and pregnant women.
Vitamin D deficiency can be caused by lack of sunlight, an inadequate diet, and metabolic disorders.
Long-term vitamin D deficiency in adults, especially the elderly, leads to softening of the bones and increased susceptibility to fractures. In children, it causes disturbances in growth and motor development, weakness, susceptibility to infections, loss of appetite, and rickets.
Vitamin D has a beneficial effect on the immune system, maintaining good resistance to disease, and is important for bones, teeth, muscles, mood, and hormonal function.
Vitamin D promotes the absorption of calcium and maintains calcium balance.
